Progress your career even without a mentor: 3 different ways
Daily I receive messages from people asking if I can mentor them. I believe mentoring is a very personal commitment and needs to be done with the right person at the right time.
Nowadays it seems more and more popular to have a mentor, but sometimes I feel that we are missing the point. The point is to grow, learn and develop yourself, your goals and your path towards them.
Before you start...
It is vital that you already know who you are, what you crave in life and when you get to the point where you know what you need to help you get there. That's when you know it's time to be searching for a mentor.
Though before you do, there are several ways to develop yourself and your career.
1# Meet in Person Once in a While
Discussing work-related things is easy over the email or phone. It’s just you and your screen. It is much harder to have the same discussions and feedback in person. But it is vital to develop skills that can get you through these meetings, leaving with the results you came for. Also meeting people in person has a higher chance of them liking you and willing to go the extra mile. It is important to discover the person sitting opposite from you, perhaps their expertise, their network or their life experiences can help you in ways you hadn't thought of before.
2# Build vertical and horizontal relationships
In your career it is important to create meaningful relationships with your colleagues, as well as your manager, their boss, but also the doorman and the lady who runs the restaurant.
Be sure to know the most important people in the company. Make sure that you know the key people who can help you in your career and life goals. Use their networks as well. You might think you don't have to know the people you don't work with, but what if one day you’ll be their manager? Or they yours? Or they are the one to hire you in a next company.
3# WWWWH
Be sure to know your Who, What, Where, When and How and keep things short. Get to the point quickly without sacrificing information or productivity.
So the goal is...
The goal is to have enough savings to live the lifestyle you want for yourself both now and later down the road.
