I don’t really enjoy networking, especially when I am the only person I know at the event. Also, I never know how to strike up a conversation. So I was happy to discover that there are other ways to start a conversation than the old ‘what do you do’. I tried these questions and they were a complete success.
Here is how to navigate networking like a pro;
1# If there is 1 thing I need to know about you, what would it be?
This usually opens up a whole other conversation than anything work-related and will bring you fun surprises about the person you are talking to.
2# Where did you spend your childhood?
People tend to open up a bit more when talking about memories. When asking about someone childhood, you might also find more common ground than you would, when just talking about your work.
3# What is a good book to read?
Most people read books. Most people have a book that they recommend to everyone. By asking someone about it, they will become enthusiastic and also explain why they loved the book. This will get you talking about other interests or the profound impacts that books can have on your life.
So the goal is...
The goal is to talk to others and get to know them beyond what they do in daily life. By opening up a conversation beyond work you get to know people a bit better and also now their interests.
What are your top 3 networking questions that you love to be asked? We would love to hear from you in the comments below. We are as much inspired by you as you are by Eve and Elle.
